Congratulations NYSSMA 2020 Participants!

I’m delighted to announce my students were rated OUTSTANDING, the highest tier of achievement at the NYSSMA Piano Festival. Wow!!! Performing in front of a judge can be a nerve-wracking experience but these kids kept their cool and aced their evaluations. One of my students even asked if she could “go again” as soon as she left the exam room!😅Congratulations to all the participants and their families. We are so proud!

Tomorrow, my students and I will be headed to the Massry Center for the Arts at the College of St. Rose for the annual NYSSMA Piano Festival.  In case you’re not familiar, NYSSMA is an organization for music educators In New York State.  Each spring, NYSSMA hosts a piano festival which gives school-age students the opportunity to be evaluated by a panel of expert musicians and music educators.  Students receive a score based on their performance of a graded solo, scales, and sight reading ability.  My students have been preparing for months and I can’t wait for them to finally show off all their hard work!

For now, we’ll keep calm and practice on. See you tomorrow at the beautiful Massry Center for the Arts!

Happy Holidays!

This is not your average holiday piano recital! We are featuring jazz and modern arrangements of your favorite tunes, including a number by yours truly.  Turn up your speakers and prepare to have your ears tickled by these merry musicians.  Happy Holidays to you and yours! 🎁😎🎹

Performance Videos Now Streaming

When it comes to motivating students to achieve their very best, I must say that performing in front of peers is near the top of the list!  Traditionally, the obligatory end-of-the-year recital has been the tool of choice for many piano teachers.   Now, with the video streaming feature available on the portal, students can reap the benefits of a recital experience at any point during the school year and without the pressure of a high stakes, one-off performance.

Student videos are already available to stream from the “studio news” portion of the portal.  The latest video will appear directly on the portal homepage for your viewing pleasure.  Videos will also include a feedback form where viewers can–and absolutely should!–share their compliments, encouragement, or feedback with the performer.  Supporting your peers and learning how to give constructive feedback is an important skill for music and for life!  As such, every student regardless of their age or ability is strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.

The video streaming feature was down for the last several weeks while IT was fixing some issues but now that it’s up and running I hope you’ll check back regularly for new videos. Who knows? You might even see a familiar face or two!

Blooper Reel 2018-19

Welcome to Week 3! We’ve been off to a great start and many students are already polishing up their repertoire in preparation for our first video recordings of the year. Performance videos are meant to give students a little taste of what it feels like to perform under pressure. Like a recital, students are expected to show off their very best playing, maintain decorum, and demonstrate good performance etiquette. Of course, just like any live recital, things don’t always go according to plan… Need I say more? Without further ado, here are all the weirdest, wackiest, and most wonderful moments caught on camera last year!!!
